Populonia Alta

Known since ancient times for the intense metallurgical activity linked to the production of iron. Famous for its vast necropolises, calcarenite quarries and iron working.

The park is divided into different visiting areas that allow you to grasp the transformation of the landscape over the centuries.

The wooded coast of the promontory faces the archipelago: the dark silhouettes of the islands including Elba and Corsica have constituted the scenic backdrop of a landscape of land and water since ancient times.

The routes, today as in ancient times, follow paved roads, cross woods and Mediterranean scrub and open onto unexpected views facing alternately the Gulf of Baratti or the open sea and the island of Elba.

Among the woods of the promontory the ruins of the Benedictine monastery of San Quirico tell of a lost city and a renewed interest in the natural and mineral resources of the region.

Archaeological Mining Park of San Silvestro

Located behind Campiglia Marittima and the promontory of Piombino, the park extends over an area of about 450 hectares.

The visit routes wind through museums, mining tunnels, a medieval village of miners and smelters founded about a thousand years ago, and paths of historical, archaeological, geological and naturalistic interest. The visit to the Park begins at the Museum of Archaeology and Minerals and continues in the Temperino Mine, to discover the evolution of mineral research and extraction techniques and the beauty and charm of the underground world.

This leads to the train visit of the Lanzi-Temperino Gallery, retracing the route of the minerals, from the mines of the Temperino Valley to the treatment plants of the Lanzi Valley. In the background of the Valley stand out the remains of the medieval Rocca San Silvestro, which represents the heart of the Park and its visit.
